1981 300sd smoking like crazy!
So the symptoms are: When I start up the car there's smoke but too much just an annoying amount. But when I was driving to day it got really really bad. It was when I got stopped by a train. Before this I had driven it in town and on the freeway(about 10 miles). I decided to turn the car off and wait for the train to pass, but when i turn it back on and hit the gas I couldn't even see the car behind me Help.

Yes the turbo bearing seals may be shot. Investigate.

I don't think it's the turbo. It spins free and is pretty quiet. It is drinking oil though.

A turbo bearing seal could be bad and might not impact the feel or easy turning component. You want to check the turbo output side for oil residue in the housing. It should be pretty dry. I imagine just removing the u tube will get you there.
Also your description sounds about right. Not much oil smoke at idle but when you come on to it a bit the oil is pushed into the combustion chambers and more smoke. Thats because at idle a pool of oil builds up down there. There could be other sources. This possibility is probably about as easy as it's going to get financially unfortunatly. Thats if we are talking a lot of smoke. Last edited by barry123400; 10-04-2008 at 11:44 PM. |
