the idle is set at 750 as far as I can tell. And I just did a valve adjustment (hoping the sound would go away)

are they supposed to be that loud??? I hear other MB diesels drive by all the time, and they purr like a kitten, this one has a nasty knock sound to it...

yes, I know its a diesel, I have swapped the injectors, adjusted the valves, changed the oil, fuel filters (valves had been neglected) check the chain, basically did some maintenance... I can't get this sound to go away..

I had given up hope that the nosie would go away, just curious what it was... no big deal, the engine has oil pressure so "run it" and call it a day I guess.

I thought it was a rod at first as well, but I have been driving it for three weeks, and no ill effects... So I don't think its a rod...Unless a rod could be bent for a long time, and not eat bearings. I'm not sure with these old MB diesels, I don't know that much about them.

its possible to have a very slightly bent rod and have it just "tap" the cylinder wall on each revolution. i would take the injector out of that hole and start the engine, if the noise is still there then you have a bent rod simple as that.

guess i'm gonna keep on drivin it, the car is very nice to drive, and no one wants to buy it... either way I have another good motor for it in my garage so if it goes bad, its no big deal. Thanks to all who chimed in, wouldn't mind hearin some other opinions though.

The last one I had that sounded like that, started making that noise and an hour later punched holes in both sides of the block
