w123 Hood Latch

Hi,
I pull the handle to my hood latch, and I feel it pop, but when I go to pull the hood up, it won't move. I tried fiddling with the handle on the hood (the one that pops out when you release the hood latch), I tried pulling up and down on the hood.

After some random jiggling, the hood will latch again, and I can pop it again, but same thing - won't actually open.

What do I have to do?

It is popping the hood, but it won't actually budge to open.

Help?

PS The grill is cracked in front, so I can reach in and do something to the latch if I need to. I just don't know what to do to get it to actually release. Also, I discovered that a whack on the hood in the area just to the left of the star (above where the handle is, but on the top edge of the grill) with a mallet (through a cloth, of course), it will latch again (meaning, the handle in the cabin springs back closed and can be "popped" again)

If the little rubber bump stops on each side of the hood are missing or out of adjustment then there won't be enough pressure to pop the hood up all the way/unlatch it. We solved this with a couple new bump stops on our 300D.

How did you get it open to install said bump stops?

My hood does seem to be down a little low (below the level of the front quarter panels).

If I have someone pull up on the hood AS I pull the lever in the cabin, would that do it?

The answer, for anyone's future reference is that I wedged something under each side of the front of the hood (slid a folded up work glove under each side) to provide the upward resistance should be there, popped the hood again, and then pulled up. It released finally.

If you have a buddy, you could have them pull up on the hood while you pop it.

I looked at the rubber knobby bumper things, and they were 100% gone - just two flat headed bolts sticking out with no bumpers on them. I stuck down some rubber pads to the body at the front shelf of the engine bay where the bumpers would make contact, hopefully providing the upward pressure needed for the future (I haven't closed it again because I am afraid it wont open again, but I'll have to close it if I am going to drive it ). I also found some little rubber feet at the hardware store, which fit perfectly where the bumpers used to be.

I give mine a shot of WD40 now and then when it acts up, scarry when it won`t pop up. I just had it not release about a month ago, jerked, banged pulled and finally used a coat hanger, cut it and made a hook on the end and reached through the grill pulled on the latch and it released.

I keep it in the trunk, works good when the little toungue breaks off and won`t pop out.
Happened when we were on a trip, hood poped up. now can`t get open, and couldn`t get it to latch shut by pushing down.

one time it wouldn`t open when I pulled the cable, no matter what I did. later one in the day we went shopping, and while driving it popped up.
