Linkage questions

Hi, I have been trying to sort out why my 240D "ran away" on me this morning. To explain, I was backing out of the driveway, lightly pressing the accelerator. I let off the accelerator and pressed in the clutch pedal because I was breaking as I was about to exit the driveway, and when I did this, the RPMs took off. I was unable to get it to stop by letting off the accelerator or by turning the key off. I had to let out the clutch against the breaks. I started up again, and it took off again.

I rolled it back down the driveway, not wanting to have that happen again. When I was back in my parking space, I popped the hood and started it again, and it was idling nicely like normal.

I tend to think it was something to do with the throttle linkages, but I am not sure.

When I press the go pedal, it seems that the linkages come back fine, pulled back by the spring near the firewall back by the oil filter. But when I move them by hand on top of the valve cover, they move to open but don't go back until I push them back.

Someone also mentioned to me that there is supposed to be a spring for the linkages by the IP. I look, and I don't see any spring there. I have attached a couple pictures of that area. Could you tell me if you can tell if anything is missing? If I need to take a picture from a different angle, let me know.
