Exclamation HELP! Valve Cover Nut/Bolt Stripped!

This was my maint. weekend. I did a diesel purge and fuel/oil filter change yesterday. Today I did a valve adjustment. Everything went fine, vlaves were slightly tight, and using the wrenches and tutorial from Dieselgiant, it was a breeze. Until it came time to put everything back together. I dropped one of the four nuts that hold the valve cover on. I went looking around in my engine, and found it. At least I thought I did. I used y retractable magnet and picked it up. It was the same size, and threaded on the first few turns by hand, so I put my socket on it, and made a few turns. Well, big mistake, it was threaded wrong, or was the wrong nut. It would not tighten down all the way, and when I start the engine now, smoke pours from that hole, and oil leaks out the manifold side of the gasket cause I can't tighten that nut down enough.

Now I can't get the nut off. When I go to turn it, the bolt, or post that is attached to the block spins with it. I can't start the vehicle, cause oil will spill everywhere.

Any suggestions ?
The is perfect timing, as I start a new job tomorrow....
Thanks,
Marty

Is the stud actually unscrewing? You are lucky if it is; for the time being, you could just replace the stud with a bolt if you can get it out.

I just went back out to try to remove the entire stud. No dice.
How do I get it out, and how do I get a new one in ?

the stud simply threads into the head, if you can unscrew the stud then your golden i would take a dremle and just take off the bolt and then remove the stud with the valve cover off.

Can you double nut it?
If you have enough threads still good, put another nut on top of the one there, tighten them to each other, then using both, you may be able to get it out, or maybe you can get a pair of vise grips on the stud.
If there is a JY nearby, get another stud from there.
NOTE, there is a long end, and short end, be sure you pay attention to it's orientation.

Ok, I got it out. I had to take the whole VC off again, and when I lifted it up the bolt/stud came out, but with a circular nut attached. Now I need to get that off, to slide the hole post thru the hole. I hope Phil sells the posts, and a fresh set of nuts. There aren't any junkyards I'm aware of near here. Thanks.

Yeah, that stud has a nut on it, and it's not in the middle, hence the orientation thing.
Good luck.
