How common are stuck rings ?

How common are stuck rings and what causes that to happen ?

I have seen threads on how to remedy this problem, however nothing on the cause.

Thanks in advance for any help on this

Granny driving,
extended idling,
un-approved fuels,
oil additives that contain PTFE other non-approved additives.

Good thing I rev mine to the max every now and then, and use diesel, and no oil additives....

it's been said that you can pull the injectors, and soak the pistons in MMO for a week or more, and improvement has been documented.
aside from that, it's pull the head, and the pistons, and clean them...

Just make sure you're happy with the idea of an oil-soaked engine, as it shoots up the dipstick tube.

Caused by what? The oil pan is full of, um, oil...adding 1/4 quart by soaking the pistons won't make much of a difference.
