ran across 79 300cd worth what?

I am semi new... the only MB I have ever dealt with is my 300sd.

In my travels yesterday I came across a 79 300cd non-turbo. It is a complete mess... It has 3 flat tires, rusted through spot's here and there, no paint on hood(rusty), paint faded completely away. Interior is filth dirty. Floor boards looked ok. License plate from 2004 on it. It is at a little crappy car lot and looks like it has been there since 04. It does have a complete engine and tranny. I broke a hood hinge looking under the hood.

$600 written on the window....

What do you think it's worth. Assuming I have no idea if the transmission works or if the engine with even turn.

I would never give 600 for it. I would be happy with 300 maybe 400 at the most. What do you guys think. Is a non-turbo CD even worth the trouble? I can't imagine how slow that car is.

Sorry no pics

Sounds like something that's going to munch your wallet if you buy it.

You could probably get ~$150-$200 in scrap metal for it.

oh, it's not a slow car, my wagon will do 90 no problem, and it'll move on flat ground. but that car sounds like a rat trap. it would not be worth taking if they were paying you several hundred to take it. paint alone will set you back 1500. body work, interior, forget engine, etc. nahh, just walk away and if you are interested in a CD, find a better example.

The only reason for acquiring that heap would be if you already owned an NA 300CD and had some space behind the garage to park it, then it would be worth a couple of hundred for odds and ends parts.

Ok thanks. I now know to stay far away from that thing.

here is a better question...

I came from the SHO(taurus) world, at one time I had four of them. I have since purged myself of all SHO tauri. I guess I have moved to the MB.

In the SHO world one would do whatever it took to keep a SHO from getting crushed. Save them all is the motto. So what about the MB diesel?

I don't need to know production numbers but are there really enough old diesel MB running around to let a few fall between the cracks?

I guess my question is.. at what point do you turn your back on a MB and let it go somewhere terrible(crusher). I certainly know that if enough get destroyed then the few that survive are worth more money. I somehow doubt that between the US and Europe there will be a shortage of old MB.

Let me know what you think.

The CD in question is in Indianapolis if anyone wants to check it out. I, however, am streering clear per the advice of my new MB forum friends.

There are more than enough of these out there to let some of these fall through the cracks... and become potentially cheap parts from junkyards.

So many of these survived (and parts are pricey) that it just doesn't make financial sense to revive an edge-of-death case when you can buy a great example with little work needed for less money overall.

I'd much rather pay 4-5k for a good CD than spend the better part of a year and 3-4K (on parts) fixing up a clunker.

I agree. There were 1.4million total diesel W123 models made in the world (2.6 million including g@ssers), 300,000 of them at the very least came to the USA. When I first got my W123 7 years ago I started counting every new MB diesel I saw on the road...I lost count 5 years ago around 350.

These are great cars but we have to face the fact that they aren't like an original HEMI or a pre-war car, some unfortunately just aren't worth the time/money it would take to bring back.

They can still be useful in junkyards, helping other cars to live longer.

lemme know if you want to save my sable from the crusher... it's still in great shape, but it leaks tranny fluid... and I have no interest in working on a ford...

I agree in principle; HOWEVER, the problem with some of the junkyards are they only keep a car on the lot for 30 days......then CRUSHER time. So, being one of members on this forum from Memphis, I do my best to grab what people want/need.

I've saved at least one car probably 2 or maybe even 3 (counting Chameleon) from the crusher.
