1983 240D drivetrain noise

HELP!!!
Sounds like a metallic grinding or clunking coming from the drivetrain. I can feel a vibration in the shaft itself when I rock the car back and forth, in gear, with one hand on the shaft. Does not appear to be flex discs. They look fairly new. What could be making a clunky grinding sound along the drivetrain that can be felt through the drive shaft when only slightlt rocking the car back and forth?

Center bearing, differential bearings, axels, wheel bearings.

clunking noise

This sounds like a carrier bearing. It holds the drive shaft to the center of the car.

This is an easy repair, but it takes forever. You should remove the tailpipes and mufflers as a unit and set aside. Then you will see the bearing and the housing in the center of the driveshaft.

After unbolting the front and rear drive shaft discs you can unbolt the carrier from the car.

Be careful to mark the position of the front part of the shaft to the rear part of the shaft so it can be reassembled the same way.

The bearing in the middle is what has gone bad. The rubber and steel housing then gets torn up by the bad bearing, so both must be replaced.
