Oh boy did i step in it this time.

I removed the rear window in my mercedes thinking "its not going to be that bad" but god damn this thing is a PITA to get back in, im glad i did it but so far i have the gasket on the window but i cant seem to get it back on the car Am i doing something wrong? its an aftermarket seal and im using the yellow 3m window and weatherstripping sealant.

Is there a detailed explaination of how to do this on the web somewhere? I just cant seem to get the two "lips" to fit correctly.

are you doing the rope trick to get it in?

You put a greased up rope in with the gasket and you then pull the rope out once its in there to help seal the gasket to the window channel.

this thread should help

thanks, i was using instead of rope vacuum tubing but ill do rope instead, its very troublesome to have no rear window :O.

So let me get this right, you have a helper push on the window while you go inside and pull the rope through to get the lip on the channel.

from what i have read, yes. Chad300td has an excellent thread w/pics showing this on a rear wagon window.

check the detailing and interiors section for my recent post about caulking the windows, he left the link there. (within last week)

Yes, you take it to Safelite and let the pros fight with that evil task. Step one should have been buying an OE gasket. I know they cost quite a bit more, but this is one of those OE-or-DIE situations......

I read a few threads that stated '..modern OE replacements have come a long way..' and that even the pros are using them b/c the quality difference is negligable.

...conspiracy? or true internet wisdom? no one will ever know

First hand experience from just a few months ago. The non-OE gasket did not have defined corners at the top and it compromised the whole installation. Took over 6 hours from a very experienced technician and the finished product was not as clean a job as I would have hoped.
That Safelite location will never use a non-OE seal again.
{this was a front windshield seal}
I guess if an aftermarket seal make sure it has 4 distinct corners molded in to the seal....

Well i broke the rear window, i must have struck it just in the right spot or something when i was installing the stupid trim, i hate this oe rubber, it doesnt fit right at all i have to literally fight it just to try and stretch it over the window. But anyways, i think im just going to vacuum up the glass and put some pexiglass in there. this window isnt worth 200$ to me.

If you do that you should be required to turn in your keys......

lol, well its only a temp fix because i dont have the extra 2-300$ for a rear windshield im really pissed off at this aftermarket seal since it was so f%@#$ hard to put the trim in that i broke the glass. Allright, ill put plastic over it with shiny silver ductape that way it still has some class. Ill drop by the junkyard tommarrow and pick up a rear windshield with trim. And ill have another go at it.

That job is a real beeatch. I did mine with an OE gasket and still managed to crack the window, I was lucky enough to have a parts car. I was never able to get the window to sit right. It still seems like it sits about 1/4 inch to far to the left. I'd never try it again.

I think you can get away with that if you have rear view mirrors of both sides of the vehicle.
