$400 diesel

For about a week now in the local paper there has been an ad for a 1985TD with no starter -$500. My wife has always wanted a beater wagon, and bless her, she said to go look. So, today I called and went out to the Hillbilly part of the coast to see the "Wagon". Found the place at the end of a dirt road. Flat roof trailer with 2nd story add-on and a GRAVE The owner turns out to be a bit scary-looking but very nice. While from the looks of his shop he knows how to work on cars, he knows next to nothing about MB diesels. He uncovers a 300D not a TD. He says he got the car in Portland 5yrs ago as he had access to cheap diesel from the boats he works on. And no, no records only reg. oil changes.320,00miles.Engine bay looks to have some home made "Fixes" with a nice coating of oil. Windows work "most of the time". He states the car ran well until 2months ago when the starter failed. He pulled the starter but lost interest when he picked up a SAAB for cheap. The car, upon inspection, while a mess has a rust-free body (unlike my 240D). So after much looking and what-not I tell him if the motor has no blow-by I'll give him $400. SO.. we pull-start the car. MEMO: CHECK FOR BREAK FLUID BEFORE GETTING PULLED DOWN A DIRT ROAD AT 30mph! But, darn if the motor purrs with no blow-by. So now it sits in my driveway.

What's the story on the air filter?

I'm not sure, but it appears to be a flex tube with a sponge type filter. The blow by tube drains to the ground and EGR is not hooked up. As it was after dark when I got home I could not give the car a thorough going over.

The Grave is a memorial to all fisher men. Tomorrow I'll clean her up and start a to-do list. Looks like I'll need to work some overtime to pay for all the stuff I have yet to find I need for her. May be time to sell the Jaguar.

I've seen double-wides, but never a double-tall!
I won't say much about him because who knows, I might end up like that some day and be perfectly happy with it. There are worse places to live than the end of a dirt road......
Nice car and a good story. Enjoy the pics too, but keep 'em coming. Wonder where that brake fluid went?
Oh, what did he pull you with???
Did you get to keep the roof rack?

Great deal! Make sure you get the correct year... Because that is not an '85. Maybe a '83?

Yes, it is a 83 I forgot to add that part to the story. As for no blow by- I checked both cold and warmed up. I'm thinking this is a rebuilt. As to what he pulled me with was a early 80's Chevy 6.2(?) diesel. I believe the brake fluid may be a booster leak at the O ring. I had to drive the car apx. 15miles on hilly back roads with a pedal that went all the way to the floor, that was a intense experience. I went slow and used my low gears, a lot. I did get the roof rack. My wife likes to bike and kayak so while she is disappointed I did not drag home a wagon, the rack helps me to justify my bringing home yet another MB.

I second the message that that engine is NOT from an 85. if the car is an 85, that's not the original motor. the PS pump nut is wing instead of plastic nurled, and there is the vacuum control valve on the valve cover... 85 would just have an electrical gadget there...
I also do not see the blue saucer indicitive of an 85... odds are quite good that it's an 83/82...

Very dirty- I don't think he know how to dump a ash-tray anywhere but the floor. Underneath all the grim I think it way be in good shape. That's a floor mat on the passenger seat. Springs feel good on both seats. Dash is cracked on top of instrument cluster. The fog is lifting so I'm going to go look at her in a little more detail. I'll post some more pictures latter.

Oh my!! That interior is, uh, neglected. Luckily they clean up to amazing levels considering the starting point.
If I brought home something that looked like that my wife would blow a head gasket. She doesn't even like the clean ones.
Keep the pics coming. Very interesting....
