240D Shaking when at stop
I have a chance to buy a 240d automatic for next to nothing. Drove about 20 miles today and it runs awesome. The only problem it has is that it shakes at a stop, but only when the transmission is engaged (idles without shaking in nuetral and park). Is this definitely the torque converter or is there any chance it is the engine mounts or some other issue? I am not very familiar with the quirks of the Mercedes Diesels, but I've had my eye out for one for quite a while and I'll probably get this one regardless since it runs so well and pretty much everything else is in adequate mechanical condition. Any info/advice is greatly appreciated.

I would suspect engine mounts first.

Go back to your personal info and you will find that you can have your car, milage, model and other info displayed automaticaly every time you start a Thread or Post.
Also at the top of the page there is a Search feature that will bring up other threads and Posts on your subject. The shaking problem is common and there is a list of things that effect it. In a year of being a Member I have not read of any shaking being caused by the Torque Converter. These are things that can cause shaking that you should check anyway when you buy a used Mercedes like you have. Valve adjustment (the clearances get tighter as the valves wear) Air leaking into the fuel supply system (on my car it was the old hard fuel inlet hoses) Motor and transmission mounts no good or softened by oil Some engines have shock absorbers next to the engine mounts to help tame the shaking. The shock absorber or the rubber parts of the shock absorber mounts may be no good. Timing chain stretch (this causes your Camshaft timing and Fuel Injection Pump Timing to be retarded/late) Fuel Injector Spray Nozzles worn out and or their opening/pop pressures incorrect or not balanced. Engine compression out of spec due to worn rings, leaking head gasket or valve problems

I don't think he has a car to add to a his profile yet
Would be nice to know the year. Do these cars have rack damper pins? Sixto 87 300D |

Thanks for the replies and for putting up with the newbie post. Great info. Hopefully I'll be getting the car in the next couple of days and will check into the issues you guys have noted.

It's an '80 model and I'm unsure as to the rack damper pin, but that is an excellent point. I don't have a Mercedes/Other project car but hopefully that will change very soon. Thanks again.

Mine does this. I've changed the engine mounts, the transmission mount, and the T-mount, replaced the engine shock, adjusted the valves, etc., and it still shakes. The best thing you can do is 1) accept that it's going to shake a bit and 2) install a working idle control knob and use it to keep the engine at an idle that minimizes the shaking.

No rack damper on my 240. I think its just on the turbo models. Everyone gave good advice about things to check. I've done all of those on mine and it still shakes some. I think its probably due to internal wear in the injection pump. Nothing to worry about. They still run forever.

holthof mentioned something that I forgot which was if your idle speed is too low your car will shake a lot.
I was in the same shaking boat when I bought my car. I bought 1 of the new Rack Damper Screws but it was of little help. For me what had the most effect on taking away the shaking was replacing the worn out Spray nozzles in my Injectors (yes I also lapped them and set the pop pressures). Next was the Valve adjustment and fixing an air leak. After replacing all the rubber mounts and doing the above things I re-adjusted the Rack Damper Screw and this time it had some good effect on removing some shaking.
