Engine swap Bay Area?

Hi folks....just found an 84 300Dt with an amazing engine and transmission.Has the most powerful setup of any 123 I've driven.Leaves my Nissan Pathfinder in the dust on long freeway climbs! However the body is in tatters...mechanically this car rocks though. My 85 300Dt is in amazing shape except that its got 275k on the clock and wont ever get over 60mph on long inclines(the 84 was still accelerating at 90mph last incline I drove it on).Now for the the question, where in the bay area can I find someone to do a transplant....my mechanic wont touch it unless I buy the engine from him.

DIY and save the money and the hassle of telling the DMV. Hopefully both cars have the Federal emisions instead of the choking Cali emissions.

I have to say Im not a fan of Medi....He was the one who sold me my 300Dt(the old lady). She looks amazing body and interior wise but ended up being a nightmare mechanically.Ive put 5k into her and still not great...... engine and transmission wise.Medi told me she just needed a service...feel pretty conned by him.He sold me the car for $2200 and assured me it was fine

Thats too bad. He's always been fair to me. I purchased the 85 in my signature from him with a donor engine and trans. Runs very well. Fires up after cranking 1/4 - 1/2 second always. Had some of the typical W123 problems like leaky door locks and bad AC, etc. but I knew that going in.

Then find another mechanic that actually wants to work.

Call Dave at APEX motorworks in Novato. Dave is a guild technician and even has the proper transmission adjustment tools for our cars, amazing! He is fair, clean and reliable. Call (415) 898-APEX . FYI, I had a very poor experience years ago with European Car service in San Rafael -

Rent a shop crane and a floor jack. Do it yourself.

Buy a round of pizza & beers and host a GTG... I'd bet we could do the swap on a weekend with a couple guys. Havn't pulled an automatic trans out of these cars, but manuals take me ~ 1 hr with air tools. Once the tranny's off, you just pick the engine straight up...

By the way, have you done any diagnostics on the old motor (eg, compression test or testing the IP) ?

I R&Red mine in the drive way with an engine hoist. Did it by my self, first MB engine that I pulled. Pulled eng and trans together, and wasn`t that big a deal. seems pulling just the eng would be more work.

Pulling just the eng, then it would lift straight up.

Pulling eng and trans, then it has to be lifted higher and use of an eng tilter.

Pull it your self, and you have just your labor involved.

Have a shop do it, and you are looking at $100.00 hr labor rate.

All depends on your schedule, how soon you have to be back on the road.

Update....

Took the donor to my mechanic, got him to drive it and he agreed to do the job for $2000 all in.I think this is a good price especially in SF.Humberto Lima At International Car Service.Im glad he is doing it he's never set me wrong and he got the best out of my old engine.

$2000 sounds expensive. What's his labor rate? Did he actually calculate it and write everything out or just throw a number at you?
