so how important is this check valve?

I traced a leak in the vacuum system of my 82 300d to the checkvalve immediately downstream of the power brake booster. Dealer wants $35 for this valve. I removed it and have been driving around for a week with no problems (vac or brake) at all. So is this valve necessary? The only reason I can even think it is installed is so that in case of a catastrophic vac failure, the power brake booster will work a bit longer. Any ideas?

Isn't that check valve there to save some vacuum in the brake booster when the engine is off? If so, the brakes will continue to have power assist if the car starts rolling with the engine off. Of course, you could just insert the key, wait for the glow cycle and start the engine before stopping the car. It kinda depends on how much excitment you like in your life I guess

as a rule: dont skimp on safety items

The check valve may also act as a buffer to the rest of the system when brakes are applied and as a buffer to the booster from the system.

on models I am familiar with ,the chack valev is incorporated into the vacuum T See picture.
