Excessive Blowby after oil cooler line blew

Hello. I bought a 1984 300SD not running. The guy said that the oil cooler line blew and I believe him because I see where he patched it up. It would not start. I had it towed home and popped the valve cover. 95% of the valves you could not get the thinnest feeler gauge between. I adjusted the valves and it started right up but ran really ruff with a bit of what I though was black smoke. The blow by was in my opinion excessive and I know the difference in these cars between excessive and ok. When I stepped on the throttle a lot of smoke from both ends of the car and when I let of the throttle the engine locked up when it got back to idle. It will turn over immediately after locking up. I am in the process of doing the compression check but need to go buy an elbow fitting to to Cyl 3 4 5. Cyl 1 and 2 were 280 and 320 respectively. The car has only 151,00 miles on it. Any ideas?

I think that the compression test will give you a better idea of the condition of the engine. It is possible, that when the oil cooler line failed, that the engine might have been run a bit before being shut down. In that case, it is possible that the piston rings took some damage, and that as a result, you have the excessive blow by.

Yep. Did it show decent oil pressure when it was running?

running it out of oil would probably damage the bearings first, IMHO.

Sounds like you have no test to see how much blowby it had before, as you only saw it running after the incident.
Do a compression test, blowby in and of itself is no big deal.
But I would also add- I don't necessarily believe miles that low when I see them, especially when there is some good blowby going on.

I can back up the low mileage blowby, My 240D sprays oil all over the place. It's powerful enough to even push a 1 foot section of 4x4 lumber off the cap.. only 169,000 miles.
