3 seconds and a little clunk before she hits gear

My 84 300d has had this since Ive owned it ,it takes 3 seconds before the trans drops into gear.Worn out part ,or adjustment needed?Thanks in advance .

When mine did that, it was a vacuum leak. It shifted hard as hell during that time too, even when the tranny was warm. The fix was the vacuum modulator on top of the valve cover and the fix of a vacuum leak I had at the T's. Search out the pics on that valve cover modulator, put in the new levers, then search out any other vacuum leaks you might have. After getting all that squared away, mine no longer clunks into gear and it shifts as smooth as these cars can get.
