Now what? (ALDA)
So I had to take the intake manifold off a 603, to tap #6 glow plug hole (don't ask), and while I was at it I figured I might as well pull the "tin can" off of the ALDA adjuster just in case i ever needed to adjust it, cause the car is sluggish even with brand new bosio nozzles. Well, when I got the lid off, I saw that in the lid removal process, the adjuster locknut had loosened to the point that the shaft was spinning fairly freely. Now I have no idea what the original position of the ALDA shaft was. Is there a standard "default" position from which one can begin adjusting the ALDA, ie. "all the way out then three full turns in" or a certain pressure setting, or am I hosed?

Just lock the nut where the shaft is currently and take it for a drive. Mash the pedal from a standstill and look for black smoke. If you have no smoke, then turn the screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise and try it again.
BTW, most 603's will run perfectly fine without any ALDA if you're the slightest bit careful with the pedal below 2000 rpms. One of the '86s and the '87 have no ALDA whatsoever. The other '87 hasn't been vetted yet.........but, you can bet that it's going to lose it's ALDA as well. |

There is no standard setting. The ALDA is a case-by-case adjustment. Do what Brian said and you'll be fine.

There's definitely a factory setting. We just don't know what it is, and, as a practical matter, it's meaningless on an older vehicle.

Not one that can be done with the injection pump on the car.

Probably true..........but, we don't know that either.

We do, there is nothing in any of the MB service manuals.

The fact that there is nothing in the manuals doesn't preclude a factory setting. We just don't know what it is. |

Someone on hear had mentioned a default starting point, something like screw it all the way down and then back it out a turn or two. You basically want to adjust it until you start seeing a difference.

The factory manual (602/603) tells that adjustment is necessary if the car is sluggish off-boost. The adjustment per the manual is measured by performance and smoke, not turns or a baseline adjustment.
