W124 RH remote Mirror Switch bulb R+R

1.Pull up front of carpet cover in Console tray and remove single Phillips screw.
2.Gently pry up the Black Plastic surround at the shifter.
3.Swing the wooden cover (Shifter console portion) upwards+forwards 90
degrees.(There are two plastic hooks that "Hook" into the Vertical portion
of the Console,at the front, underneath the ashtray...try not to break them)
4.You may now grasp the Mirror remote control switch firmly and wiggle it as
you pull it up and out of the socket in the console.

5.You will want to get a sizable towel (Not the fancy ones,S.O. will kill you)
on a flat surface with a good light source.[The towel will hopefully prevent
the semi-microscopic parts you are about to Liberate from total escape.]
6.Turn the switch upside down.On the sides are square cutouts 3-4 mm in
size into which the protrusions from the inner portion of the switch "Lock".
7.You are going to use toothpicks as wedges to release the inner portion of
the switch.
One side of the switch has 2 protrusions ,the other has 3 protrusions.
Once you have,Gently, released the inner portion of the switch;Gently
And carefully pull it up and out of the bottom.
Be very careful! there are 3 Tiny silver "Doggie Bone" Electrical connectors
that rest on 6 Tiny Coil Springs...If you lose ANY of these...
You're Screwed!
8.Lay the "Doggie Bone" and Coil Spring portion of the switch Gently aside.
(I went WILD,and treated the Coil Springs and the "D Bs" with WD40
[a minute portion] which helps to hold them in place...I am a
foolish risk taker!)
9 You are now looking at the circuit board part of the switch(with the pin
barrel type connectors on the other side).
In one corner of the board is the smallest damn 12 volt light bulb I've
ever seen.
You will have to de-solder the old burnt out bulb and solder in a new
one.
10. I used radio Shack part# 7219 (two bulbs,with wire terminal bases)
12 volts 60mA.
(I am actively looking for an LED replacement bulb...'Can't find one
that small yet)

In picture 2 the toothpick is being inserted between the inner and outer portions of the switch to release the locking tabs.
In pictures 3,4+5 the toothpick points to the light bulb.
In pictures 4+5 one of the "Doggie bone" connectors, with it's two coil springs ("Glommed on" with WD40) is visible below the left lower portion of the switch.

Take your time...Prior Planning ("Semper Paratus") ELIMINATE ALL "Distraction Opportunities" from any sources!

Wow! Thanks for the nice DIY – how did you discover that this switch is illuminated? I never knew. The bulbs in my '87 and its junkyard spare are both burned out so I'll have to go shopping. BTW, all the Radio Shack part numbers I see are in the format xxx-xxxx. Not sure how to go about finding a "7219," they don't list it on the RS web site.

OK, found the lamp in the Mouser catalog, it is Mouser part #606-CM7219. It's a Chicago Miniature product, the "7219" is a Chicago number. Mouser's price is US$0.35 in single quantities. Not sure about minimum order, shipping, etc.

Do you know if the mirror control in the W123 models is illuminated?

That's like the vent control lights, ... I've had a couple of 124 people hop in my car and comment that theirs aren't lighted, ... didn't know they are supposed to be.

Have you fixed the light in the seat switches yet? (kidding of course)

My 123's mirror switch does not illuminate – I just checked. Shall have to take it apart, see if it has a lamp (burned out) or no lamp at all.

The 123 CD-ROM FSM Electrical manual (page 136) shows the right-hand outside mirror switch but does not show it illuminated, nor does the wiring diagram for the other lighted switches in the console (pages 125-125) show a light for the mirror switch. If that is so, perhaps a 124/126 switch could be substituted.

[edit] I found a 123/126 switch in my junkbox. The part number is 126 820 08 10 and it is NOT illuminated. It might be possible to take it apart and use the case with 124 guts inside to get an illuminated 123/126 switch.
