Mine don't have one!

There's some kind of 'cross over' tube or pipe somewhere on the front of the engine that appears (in pictures I've seen) to go from the water pump to the block. Doesn't look like it's very long but it is somewhat 'C' shaped.

What is it? And, was it omitted on the later model 123's? Just curious ...

Exclamation Water Pump Vent.....

That little pipe is a "Water Pump Casing Vent"...my car doesn't have one either....Mercedes Shop Roy....told me that "someone must have removed yours" on my '85 300D......I don't know about ALL later models of W123....

All Centripetal Pumps can become "Vapor (air) Bound" and will not pump.!! This is because they are NOT positive displacement pumps.....by design of pump type....

When a centripetal pump is "Vapor Bound" it only pumps minimally, or not at all....

The "vent" allows trapped air to travel up into the head, where it is eventually worked out of the system via the "expansion tank"....

I noticed this a couple of years ago, when I replaced my water pump. and did a coolant flush....I vented the pump by cracking the little plug on the water pump casing.....until my coolant flowed out......assuring that the pump was, in fact, full of coolant.....

I since have acquired a "Vent Line", and 2 each "Banjo Bolt" and "Copper Pressure Rings"....will eventually install when working in this area again.....

As I understand.....some of these became clogged / corroded due to the use of "Incompatible Antifreeze"......

SB,
I do not think I could have 'paid' for a better explanation! Thanks...

Guess I'll need to pay attention to this as I am about to embark on replacing my WP very soon.

My 85 300D didn`t have one either.

I removed a few at PNP to find a good one. when I installed my new
engine, I added one.

I pulled an engine out of an 85 at PNP, and it didn`t have that little pipe
either. must be an 85 thing?
