Question cv joint compatibility-300SD vs. W123

I have an extra set of cv joints for my 1984 300SD. Over the weekend, we discovered that my son's 1984 300D is in need of CV joint boots. Can I use the 300SD joints on the W123? I did a search and was not successful. Any help would be appreciated.

Tom

I really don`t see why they wouldn`t work. I have several axles out in the barn, 123 and 126. they look to be the same length.

some 126 axles have the iron ring bolted on the diff end. I think it is a vibration dampner, but not sure. two bolts, and it comes off.

my 84SD does not have this, looks similar to the 123.

also the 126 diff up to 85 looks like the 123 diff.

reading about swaping in a 2:47 Diff. from a 126 into a 123, the 123 axles
can be used. so I don`t see why the 126 axles would not work.

126 axles newer than 85 will not work as they have a totally different
rear suspention. I have a set out of a 91 126 and they will not fit into the
diff I have from a 83SEL. the earlier diff have a row of bolts on the side
of the diff the axle would rub against.

Thanks for the replies! I was trying to get a hand on this yesterday evening via the internet. Here is what I discovered, Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts carry the shafts for the 123 but not the 126 of the same year (1984 in this case). Carpart.com also differentiates the two models by specifically asking whether you want a 123 or 126 axle. Now I am really cornfused. Maybe I will just wait to fix these shafts until my son wrecks this 123 like he did the last one. Ha! Seriously, I am going to try out the extra set that I have at home and see if they will fit. I was trying to avoid tearing the car down, finding out that the pair that I have don't work and having to wait a week before I get new ones. My son would be driving my 300SD during that time and that prospect scares me more than renegade asteroids striking the earth.

I was told that the axles for the W123 and W126 were different by a forum member who has both models. So, I can't make a definitive declaration here, but I can sure help to further muddy the waters.......

one axle or both? advance carries axles for >$100, new, so you could just order a pair. your son does have a job?
