Trouble cold starting
It is starting to get a little cooler here and I am noticing trouble starting the 300 sd already.
Other than this problem the engine runs nice. When she does start, it like a bucking bronco until it warms a little. And no power at all. Things I thought it could be. 1. Bio Diesel - running a 3 to 1 mix with diesel 2. Glow Plugs What can I do to improve this? I also read in the user manual that you can give the engine some throttle when starting in the cold. I thought that was a no no. |

Real BioDiesel or vegetable oil?
Giving it 1/4 throttle is fine, pumping like you would with a carb is a waste of time. Get a voltmeter, check that the glowplugs are getting voltage and measure the ohm reading of each. They should be be between 0.1-0.9 ohms when cold. |

From my own personal experience, make sure your battery is fully operational, as the heat of the glow plugs are directly related to its' output! Next, make sure your engine oil is not too viscous for cold weather operation! And finally, try letting your glow plugs heat alittle-while longer after the dash indicator goes-out.

What temps are you getting outside these days? Running B75 might not be the right blend depending on the temps.
Glow plugs could definetly be a source of hard starting. I would check to make sure each plug is getting voltage, and that each plug is glowing like it's supposed to. I've never had much luck testing the resistance of the plugs. I always take the plugs out and give them 12v, and make sure they are getting good and hot.
