5 speed tech and opinion

I am building a 2wd s10 pickup powered by a 240 d motor. i have built a lot of custom vehicles and i understand the costs and time which they consume so avoid pointing that out.
questions, i just recently stumbled upon a late 80s early 90s (not sure exactly) 300e with a 5 speed in it. what are the main differences between the 240d and newer 300e tranny (bellhousings, starter locations, output shaft sizes, etc.)? i figure this isnt a bolt up and go swap but i wasnt sure how closely related they are. initially i just wanted to build an adaptor for the chevy tranny but running into this 5 speed mercedes got me thinking.

thanks

the 5spd you have will not bolt up. easiest way to tell, 240D has starter on passenger side, your 5spd will have the starter on the driver side. the only obstacle is the starter and bell bolt pattern, splines are the same. So you can do a ton of fab to make the late 80's 5 spd work, do a ton of fab to make another makers 5 spd work, or use a 4 spd from a 240D.

It will bolt up to a '86-up diesel known as the 602 (5cylinder) or 603 (6cylinder). More power, less maintenance, quieter, ...

There is a thread that lists a website that sells GM adapter plates for OM61x engines.

thanks so far.
i may dig a little deeper into the 5 speed tranny i found and look at mating the bellhousings but if im going to do all the fab work i would rather use a gm tranny that is common, cheap, and bolts up to the truck. as for the 240 tranny if i could find one i prob would use it but i would prefer a 5 speed. im going for maximum mileage out of this project.
the gm adapter sounds cool. where did u see that? building an adapter is easy but it would be nice if someone else had already done all of the research on which clutch disk and bushings to use.

thanks so far guys

thanks, it looks like the 4x4 labs guys arent exactly ready to sell yet. when i do swaps i agree with "diesel rover" and prefer using stock parts wherever i can. hate to build a long distance high mileage truck that cant get parts anywhere it can be driven. i think im going to go with the stock 616 flywheel and then get out the calipers and start digging for clutches that will fit within it. the adapter plate itself is pretty straight foreward.
anyone have a good source for 616 flywheels?

thanks again

Start checking the Junk yards, PNP etc... I pulled two 4 speeds and all the accessories this year. I have a couple projects coming up.

keep checking, they show up from time to time.

The guy hasen't been " Exactly ready yet" for the last-what 6 yrs or so, and never will. I dont believe it's a 4x4 lab he is tweakin at. you cant make a chevy style flywheel work. This guy needs to quit smokin nor cal's finest and hangin out at-or gettin ready for the next burning man festival in Nevada.

There are others who have the right idea, one guy put a np435 to one with a plate. anothe route is a custom bell with the right ass end to mount a whateveer like the advanced adaptors chevy bell-ie multiple bolt patterns on the flat. the clutch----Guess what 240d-----same spline as the s10---uses the exact same align tool, you are already there if you got the d clutch.
