2.5 Turbo dead pedal - stumped by this one

I have a little problem with my '91 300D. Normally I drive this car a short
distance back and fourth to work and it has been very reliable. Two weeks
ago, I took it on a trip from Rhode Island to northern New York to attend a
college job fair. On the trip up, I pulled into a rest area and noticed
that it was running a little rough. Reved it a few times, shut down, hit
the rest room, and took off. All was well the rest of the trip up. On the
way back, I noticed a really funny shift at Sevey's Corners which is about
45 miles into the 375 mile trip home. No worries, keep going. About 10
miles later it dead peddled! Now mind you, if you look on the map, Sevey's
Corners is just north of the Adirondack forest - the middle of nowhere - and
it's 9:30 PM already. So I coasted a bit and then it came back to life -
and I drove on. During the rest of the trip it dead peddled about four more
times - one time it never recovered and I coasted to the side of the road.
Trying to start it just produced a really rough idle and lots of smoke out
the pipe. Finally after a few tries it lit back up and I motored on.

I ended up getting home at about 3 AM safely, but what a ride. The car has
not exhibited the symptoms since, but I only drive it 11 miles each way to
work each day for the most part. I drove it 180 today and it never dead
peddled, but it didn't feel quite right a few times - a feeling I remember
vividly at midnight on the Mass Pike.

So here is what I have ruled out - Fuel and fuel filters are fine and
unlikely culprits because they were recently changed. Vacuum system
seems fine in the driveway with the gauge on it.

Possibilities - IP on the way out, bad injectors, sensors and other control
devices.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Fred

It sounds like a fuel filter but you ruled that out. What about the in tank fuel screen?

On just speculation and your description I might get the rebuild kit for the lift pump. Very cheap, around six bucks I think. This is just to eliminate it as a possibility.

I would set aside the ideal of it being the injection pump or injectors for now anyways. They do not become intermitent as a general rule. I also do not think any electronic control system will shut the engine right down on a 91 300d but could be mistaken there. They may induce a rough running condition or something simular like lower power perhaps. I have never owned a newer mercedes diesel than the 123 series. .

This is an intermittent problem and they can depending on frequency and effect be hard to isolate. When you say dead pedal I have to assume you mean the engine has just died out.

A not quite totally obstructed fuel tank vent might produce your symptoms as well. Read up about that in the archives. Fuel supply other than whatever impacts it at times is normal since the car can run highway speeds when the problem is not present.

That's right, when I say dead pedaled, I mean it just shut down. I am pretty sure it is not the filters because they are only a month or two old. Strainer in the tank and lift pump are good posibilities. Maybe that is where I will go next.

Another thing I have noticed is a rough idle and more smoke than usual at start-up. All the glows are good so it's not that. A compression check is probably in order as well. Any recomendations on a good guage?
