Exclamation Opinions Needed fo Vacuum Pump OM603

I am about to get a vacuum pump for my 300SDL...but am having doubts...

There is this item on ebay that I am going to buy locally (he lives not to far from me).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCEDES-603-ENGINE-VACUMM-PUMP-300SDL-300D_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c39Q3a1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2 ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem380074721033QQitemZ380074721033

I was wondering if this is a good buy or a bad one. I'm pretty sure it's used...but I hear the 4 screws pump is good and would last a while.

Good or bad?

I have one of those, I think, probably made in China (unmarked) on my '87. Has been OK so far (~3000 miles).

How do you know it's the pump? Have the checked the vacuum valve on the output of the pump?

Question

I have checked nothing so far on this thing...all I really know is the "4 screw" cover is better than the stock smooth one...

I'm not sure about the output...

Ask yourself this before cheaping out:

do you really want to gamble your motor for $200?

Before you pull out the pump, check the valve on the top - I lost vacuum recently (no power brakes, engine wouldn't shut off, etc) and that was the problem - not the pump. To check the valve, remove the the metal vacuum line that goes into the top of the pump, you'll also need to take it loose from the fuel filter bracket so you can lift it out of the way. The large fitting that you just removed the vacuum line from is the valve. Shine a light down into the valve, if you see a black plastic fitting inside the valve, it's probably good. If the light shines through it, you're in luck - the valve is bad and it's easy to change - just unscrew it and get a new one from your local MB dealer - with a MBCA membership, the valve is around $45.
Now comes the sticky part, the broken parts are inside the input line going into the pump. There is a process to remove the spring, washer and the broken plastic parts - if the valve is your problem - let me know and I'll give you the rather legnthy, but simple and cost-free way to get the pieces out without removing the pump.

All great replies and thanks!

Fortunately, I've had no problems with this vacuum pump yet....

I'd like to avoid it all together...so far there have been no brake failures, engines can't shut off, and whatever else follows vacuum pump failure...The last thing I want to do is find out those balls broke loose and I don't have a car=(...

So I checked it out and I was wondering if that was worth it.
