Question about removing shut off valve on 86 300 sdl
Hi,
I am attempting to replace the shut off valve -- the one next to the ALDA device -- and there is a black hooded connector blocking its removal. The connector goes into a brown plastic ring with a lever sticking out. This ring appears to be sitting (threaded onto?) a threaded tube sticking out of the IP body. My question is how do I correctly remove the black hooded connector? Does it pull straight off or involve the brown ring somehow. I am wary of breaking anything by forcing it. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! I can post a pic if needed. Kevin |

There is a collar on the outside of the round plug - there should be a tab on the collar. Rotate the collar counterclockwise using the tab for leverage and them lift the plug straight up. As I recall you have to rotate the collar about 90 degees or so before the plug can be removed. I took the opportunity to remove the ALDA and toss it. once it is gone it is easy to remove the shut off valve.

Success
For future readers, here is what I did:
I removed the vacuum lines from the shut off valve (SOV) and ALDA. I trimmed the rubber hose for the SOV so that a fresh undeformed section would grip snugly upon reinstallation. I removed the plug on the device behind the SOV per the instructions already given. I rotated the ALDA slightly so that the corner was not obstructing the removal of the SOV. I removed the two M10 bolts holding the valve in place. The bolt towards the valve cover is much more difficult to remove. I did it by using a high quality (read thin forged) 10mm box wrench with a 12 point end. By flipping the wrench over repeatedly a few degrees of travel can be achieved. Slowly the bolt is removed. To free the SOV you need to pry it up by beginning at the back edge nearest the brown plug retaining ring mentioned previously. If you do this the arc will allow you to slightly compress the retaining ring and pass by it. It you pry from the opposite side it is likely that you will break the retaining ring. When you install the new SOV do not forget the O-ring. Be careful to fit the horizontal pin on the sliding arm of the SOV into the open "Y" yoke presented by the manual shut off arm as you slide the SOV into the hole. Press down on the lever to bring the yoke upwards. Reverse the earlier steps. Read the cautionary threads about runaway motors resulting from incorrectly installed SOVs. I celebrated the successful installation with a Warsteiner Dunkel. Prost! |
