240D highway noise
Took my '79 240D on the freeway for the first time this morning. The performance was about what I expected (allow lots of time and room to reach 70 mph!) but the noise was a bit discouraging. With the engine revving that much it was very loud.
I am missing a hood pad. How much will that help? I also need to replace the driver side door weatherstripping; it is shot. That should cut down on some road noise as well. Anything else I can do? How fast can these things go? With no tach I'm not sure how close I am to "red line" at 70-75 mph... |

Yes the hood pad will help reduce noise I think. Many wear items like motor and transmission mounts should be in good condition as well. There is a lot to be said for a good audio system aboard.
Oddly enough my 79 240d is far quieter at speed than my 83 240d. If I cannot locate a five speed for my 79 I will eventually go to the next lower rear end ratio. Any improvement is good. Speed? Hard to say. First is any speedometer error as yours came new equiped with european sized tires. Plus the normal built in speedometer error. From my experience some are quicker and faster than others. In away this area is being investigated now. Cervans rack damper pin thread touches the subject. At least running 70-75 constantly does not hurt them. Some claim oil consumption is increased a little at speed. I still really like my 240ds. There is some kind of lasting character with them. There was one possible upside I considered with this operational noise. . If you were blessed with a woman that talked nonstop. She would still throw in the towel at high speed in a 240d. |

Yes i'm battling this same problem. noise on the highway in this thing is horrible. 70mph seems to be about as quiet as it gets. Hoodpad makes no difference on the highway.

The basically cheap modification of going from a 3.69 rear end to a 3.46 rear end from any naturally aspired five cylinder 300 d is a seven percent reduction in rpm I believe someone quoted. So the noise you experience at 70 would be the same as driving at about sixty five miles per hour.
You could try that driving experiment and see if the change might be enough to be worthwhile noise wise. Tom is kind of the expert in different rear end ratios on 240ds. I think the next lower rear end is a 3.07. Perhaps a little too much for a 240 d to pull at times. Check the archives for more info on that. Toms posts to be specific. He is kind of the rear end specialist on 240ds on site. |

I don't think I can change the rear end here in Southern California. There are several pretty big grades that I drive up once in a while.
