Help 1980-300SD Transmission

I have a 116 300SD that would start but would not move... shifted all gears and nothing worked... Pulled the transmission and found the ears on the torque convertor were sheared off... This convertor had the narrow ears... Can the front of the transmission be removed and replaced with the later model that allows the use of a torque convertor with the wide ears??? Can this be upgraded??? Any help will be appreciated... I would like to reinstall this transmission in the car... Jim

What is the model number of the transmission? What caused yhe ears to shear off? Was it just from years of use or did the front pump or something behind it lock up?

This is the 722.120 transmission. Same thing happened on my W116 300SD and I have seen several reports of this on the forum.

I doubt that the newer TC could be used without major modifications. The front pumps are totally different- the 722.1xx pump bolts in from the back and the 722.3xx pump bolts in from the front.

Bad design- but at least it lasted 30 years....

Rick

Would a complete later model transmission with the larger ears bolt in to a W116 300SD? Trying to calculate my options, should mine follow suite.

Yes, it will bolt up, however you may have to slightly tweak the vacuum and cable controls to the transmission, I'm not sure how the earlier one is set up.

I've got a good used working 722.120 from a 1980 300SD sitting in my garage. I pulled it about 2 months ago. I drove the car before I pulled it (the floor was rusted through in several spots) and the transmission was really smooth.

If anyone is intersted PM me.

Now back to the original topic. I was planning on putting this tranny into my 84 SD. I never physically tried because I came to realize that I would have no speedometer since the 120 was mechanical and my 303 was electrical. I purchased another one and installed it. It appeared to me that there should be no problems in getting it to bolt up. But getting a speed signal was a whole nother issue.
