This vacuum pump should be compatible
with my 1987 300D? Same model number but the 300D is not shown in the cross reference...
Looks like 1987 300SDL is, so it should be fine then I guess, the same engine? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150303385658&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005 |

Yes, the SDL and D have the same engine. This should work fine.
As for quality, I can't help you there. If anyone else knows, though, there are 5 available so I just might have to get one for myself!

It's probably similar to the one I bought last year although the price is higher. Someone in another thread here a few days ago found one like it for $100. Mine did not have a "made in" mark of any kind and probably was made in China. I installed it a few months ago and have about 3000 miles on it and no problems so far.

You'll pay for MB label ATF but not for MB label vacuum pump? Hmm...

I'm on the same boat as Mr. BLACKCDI.
For the peace of mind, should it be something German? |

Well, Pierburg pump purchase did not work out, it was an old website with old prices.... I had a budget for this Benz and had to stick to it, so I went ahead and bought the Ebay pump http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150303385658&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005
It does not have any mention of the manufacturer, I am assuming it's Chinese. I had to modify the gasket that came with it, if you look at the picture, the bottom part of the gasket has a barrier, my old gasket did not have that. This barrier interfered with the heads of the bolts that hold the inside housing. I had to cut that barrier out. Not sure what it was for in the first place, and why they made it that way since it's not quite compatible... As far as the pump install goes, is there a particular trick to it or is it straight forward? I just aligned the bolt holes and started tightening. The pump did not sit flush at first, but it went in as the bolts were tightened> is this normal? Thanks!

When you replace the pump, you're supposed to not reinstall the basket and the 3 bolts that hold it and use the gasket shown in the picture without modification. The gasket with a barrier, as you call it, is referred to around here as a dam gasket.
So another bonus of Pierburg pumps is they come with instructions There is another metal gasket available from the dealer that doesn't thave the barrier and fits around the basket. Looks like you have a hybrid now Sixto 87 300D |

Yep, that would of helped)))))))))) But you think my hybrid should work fine? I cut it out real nice, I am sure it's comparable to the one sold at the dealer.. Oh, and that gasket actually was metal, just thin... Quote:

black,
i hope it works out. i'm alwasy a bit leary of buying chinese made stuff. case in point: i own a Mak 90 rifle (Chinese AK). compared to my sheriff buddy's AR-15 bushmaster, its night and day. yes, i know the design philosophies behind it, but that always comes to mind. i suppose a new chinese made pump is better than an old 200k pump. i may follow in your footsteps soon |

As long as the pump seals around the basket flange, not on it, you should be fine.
