IP timing issues - replace timing chain ??
1984 Mercedes 300sd Turbo Diesel 350K miles +
I think I have some IP timing issues and I have read one of the more common reason for this in old Mercs is the slight stretching of the timing chain. My question is this. If I am thinking of replacing the timing chain anyways (as I have recently bought the car with NO history of maintenance and have spent quite some money so far doing other repairs and maintenance) will this fix the IP timing issue, or will I still need to do this after the chain has been replaced. I think I can fairly easily do the timing chain replacement but from what Ive read adjusting the timing is another battle in itself. Thank you |

Timing that is not all that hard with the drip method. I am not prepared to describe it here, but it can be found in the threads and in most repair manuels. Basically you remove a part from the first injector at the IP and attach a curved line in place of the injector line. I made one from an old injector line.
You should check the stretch on that chain first though. If it is out of range it should be replaced. Now that is not a simple job. |

why do you think its a IP time problem??
i would replace the chain and the tensioner rail, tens. spring, gasket needed just to be safe align the marks on the cam and check the reading on the balancer before anything

You did not say how you know your timing chain is stretched too much. Alos, if you change the Timing Chain (you need to rent or buy the over $200 rivet crimping tool) you shouel do the Fuel Injection Pump Timing any way.
I would highly recommend getting the Factory Manual CD for either job. The origional factory CD manual is $20 and about $6 added to ship it The 300D manual is QL-6516-5610-02 (it will be called a Service Manual on the site) Here is a split pic that will give you a way to see how much your timing chain is stretched The left side of the pic is the Camshaft Timing Gear mark lined up with the timing mark on the Camshaft Bearing Tower. The left side of the picture is shoeing the degree marks on my Crankshaft Damper (showing that I am at least 2 degrees Late/Retarded). Indicating that I my Camshaft was timed at Top Dead Center when it left the facory it now is 2 degrees of due to Timing Chain Stretch and wear on the timng gears.
