80 300 TD for $1K. Should I buy it?
A friend of a friend is selling his 80 300td for $1000.
It smokes a lot and has little power. I'm not a seasoned mechanic but have built a few Japanese gas motors, done rear ends etc. In the interest of avoiding pulling the motor, would it be crazy to drop the pan and put some new bearings on the bottom end without cutting the crank? Is there anything I should know about pulling the head? Maybe the valves are just way out of spec? The vehicle is quite far from me, and I don't have any spare time (or $$$) these days, but I just can't resist the temptation. Maybe just bring some tools and gauges and start with the valves? But what about other likely problems? What else could be the problem? Rings or valves are the only two problems that come to me. 13x,xxx miles. A very youthful engine to be exhibiting such behaviour. Any suggestions?

If it has oil pressure, no need to worry about the bearings, yet.
Could be valves, timing, bad injectors. If the car has good compression (verified by a compression test) good oil pressure and dosn't burn much oil, it shouldn't cost too much to fix. But it WILL take time. Sounds like a good deal if the body is sound and the other basic tests are passed.

At a real 130k the block should still be fine. The problem is establishing and believing the 130k is real. Thats only around 5K per year. Reallly quite low for a diesel.
Some of your other questions. You have to remove the engine to get the complete oil pan off. Valves out of adjustment should not cause a tremendous amount of smoke. Injector or injectors faulty could for example and lower power. This engine is expensive to do major work on in comparison to many out there. A rebuild with new pistons etc is quite high even doing what you can yourself. The chances of getting a 130k example are not good. It can happen though. Basically the cars interior with 130 k should look like new if it is a tex material. Leather can go much further downhill than the tex over the years. If the car is otherwise fundementally sound the price is not bad even if you might have to get a used engine. Actually only you can make the choice of aquiring it or not. Sometimes a deal sometimes not. We would have to go take a look to make a decision just like you unless we already were familiar with the individual car. Your question is not the easiest to answer. Many cars I might consider buying have to be personally examined to find out if whatever is there is worth the money in the eye of the beholder. Amount of rust if any is always a serious concern for example. If the car has just been driven for years and years with nothing repaired or kept up it can be a real money pit as well. Would you be willing to post more information on the car for your pal? There may be other forum members interested in it.

For a newbie, help me understand what's wrong with this particular year of motor? I'm not referring to the one in this actual car, but I see the comments about it being the orig motor...don't get it. I'm curious...so please help me understand

He did say it had 13x,xxx miles on it; would that be about right for "Smokey"? Maybe I could drop Chameleon's engine in it? Did Smokey's SLS work?

Dang I liked that wagon. It even had more paint than Smash....... No worries with power from the non-turbo engine. You can tell the difference, but it isn't enough to matter. {especially after driving 240's}
