Definitive answer to P0400???

97 E300 with P0400 Have checked vacuum lines, cleaned all "flapper" valves on intake manifold, cleaned and checked EGR. Reset light and let idle...light comes back on usually in about a minute...sometimes must be driven a very short distance. Have searched the forum and have not found the answer. Has anyone found the definitive answer to this code??? Any help is much appreciated!!!

P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction

My '96 is similar to your '97. Have you disabled EGR (sounds like not)? I have not had this error code except when I was playing with the EGR plumbing as part of disabling EGR. Seems to me that one of my car's POs had this code and the dealer ended up replacing one or more of the flaps because they were all crudded up with sludge (carbon + oil) from the EGR system. Have you ever had the intake manifold off for a thorough cleaning? I was amazed at how bad my car was when I took it apart. Now that EGR is disabled it stays clean inside.

The EGR on my turbo engine is controlled by a electronic vacuum transducer located on the firewall adjacent to the EGR. Yours ought to be the same.

You might check its vacuum supply lines to the EGR and the electrical signal. More info if you search threads about E300 N/A EGR delete.

Check the wiring to the transducers. When I replaced my glowplugs and cleaned my manifold, it seems I broke a wire to one of the transducers (albeit the break wasnt visible). I ended up taking it to the dealer and $375.00 I was back in business.

Thanks for the replies! I have fixed the problem and we can now add an item to check for code P0400. Believe it or not.....the battery. I have seen other codes come up with a bad battery but I'm a bit surprised though that it was an EGR flow malfunction code. The battery had enough power to start the car. I checked it and it had some acid powder forming in the middle of the battery...a bad cell. The battery is a voltage regulator so the bad cell must have been causing problems in the electrical system. So remember to check your batteries!
