Aftermarket oil and vac gauges: best places to tap?
Hi all,
I completely forgot i have an extra Autometer vac gauge as well as a oil gauge. I'd love to install these where the ash tray is as many others have done. For the vac gauge, where is the best place to tap it? I imagine somewhere before it hits any of the VCVs or dashpots. For the oil gauge, I have not a guess as I really have not done any research here. Finally, what about a third gauge? I'm thinking coolant temp given all the warnings about overheating and cracking the head. Opinions? Thanks, Bob |

If you tap into the line at the vacuum pump, you can keep an eye on the pump but it won't be very exciting to watch – once the engine gets going it will rise to 20-25" Hg and just stay there. If you tap the line to the transmission it will act like a gasser's intake manifold vacuum (aka "economy gauge"). Much more interesting to watch as you drive the car. Vacuum decreases as you press on the footfeed, recovers when you let off. Allows you to see if your clunky shifts (if any) are vacuum related.
Your "oil gauge" is pressure or temperature? If pressure, you already have one in the cluster, why a second? Ditto for the coolant temp. Cluster gauges not working? Jeremy

Is the oil pressure gauge electrical or mechanical?
How about a cylinder head temp gauge? The ones I've seen for gassers have a thermocouple that serves as a spark plug washer. Voltmeter? Sixto 87 300D |

jeremy and sixto,
thanks for your replies. to answer your question jeremy about my gauges, yes, the oil pressure gauge in the instrument cluster is jerky. it'll stay at 3 and then fall like a wounded duck to 2. its erratic. i have my current aftermarket oil pressure gauge (electric) in my 4runner and its extremely smooth and reassuring to see the oil pressure as it should be. jeremy, i just got done putting on a replacement modulator cap i just bought and I refreshed the rubber vac hose as well. I dont believe i have enough plastic vac tubing and i dont know where it connects to (towards the engine or cabin, not sure), so i left it alone for now. but its a great place to run a T from it and straight to the gauge. thanks for the idea. as for the coolant gauge, it works better. probably if i think about it, i dont really need it. but i dont hvae a lot of confidence in the stock gauge, so thats why i was thinking about installing something more accurate. six, i like the idea of a cylinder head temp gauge. |

why not 5 cylinder head temp gauges? one at ea cylinder. the temp is not the same from one end to the other.
we can get carried away with all these gauges, soon we will have a dash that looks like a big rig. Iam not being critical here, my mind started to wonder to all places on a vehicle we could stick some kind of sensor to check temp, pressure, vacuum, air speed. Indicated speed, actual speed and calibrated speed. gallons per hr/mi. Oh yeah GPS. and....and.... Charlie

How about 5 cylinder head temp sensors and a modulator that switches what the gauge displays every couple of seconds or however long it takes the gauge to stabilize?
Trade the vacuum gauge for a boost gauge. How about one of those gauges that tells you how hard the lift pump is working? Kind of like a fuel tank vacuum gauge from what I understand of it. Some of the high end Diesel filters have provision for such a gauge. Heck of a lot more useful than a vacuum gauge Sixto 87 300D |

On early 24 valve Dodge/Cummins diesels lift pump failure usually led to catastrophic IP failure so a fuel pressure gauge is frequently added at the output side of the main fuel filtre which allows you to track lift pump function and filtre condition, rather than change filtres on a schedule, you change when the pressure drops off, and when that doesn't solve it, you immediately know to dig deeper.

Those also have rotary pumps that depend of fuel for primary lubrication.
