Funny "boing" sound

It started yesterday. Sometimes when I turn or go over a speed bump, I hear a distinctive "spring" or gong type sound coming from (i think) the rear section of the car.

I looked underneath and saw nothing. I will try this weekend to raise each wheel, spin it by hand and see if i can replicate the sound.

Anyone here have any ideas what it could be?

It 'feels' like a spring being released from tension. Vague description I know.

The sound you are describing does not sound wheel related. Other than caused by the wheel going up and down. Before jacking the car up bounce test each rear corner of the car. Same if you were checking for bad shocks. This may enable you to locate the exact area the noise is coming from if you can reproduce it.

Maybe something simple like an exhaust hanger?

I'm not very familiar w/ the chasis. Do you have independent susp?

I personally would check the upper and lower spring perches, torsion bars, and shock mounting bolts.

then start with inspection of the joints.

if it is in the front, then there is an excellent chance it is the upper strut mounts / bearings.

Another commonly overlooked item is shock fatigue; if you think there might be too much bounce in the rear, it could be related (ie.. overworked springs wearing out their cushions)

I've experienced a similar thing in my 82 wagon. It usually happens when I am turning hard one way or the other, and I go into a parking lot with a steep entrance. Its a deep sound from the rear. I only hear it in those situations, which isn't very often. The only things I can thing of that would make a sound like that would be the rear springs or the sway bar.

I have this same sound, its the sway bar rubber. Take some grease or oil and shoot it in the bushing and it will stop the noise for awhile. (you can also use graphite if you want the bushings to last longer)

Agree that it probably the rear sway bar ends ( I assume you car has them too). They are just little extenders that connect the rear sway bar to the wheel at the top. They are cheap and easy to fix.

Check the exhaust hangers and all the other stuff mentioned. Also look for a broken shock hitting the spring.

And check your ball joints. Mine are going bad on the SD and it makes a similar noise.

Your sway bar linkage could have popped under pressure.
