85 300sd Leaking coolant
Yesterday, I drove home from work and was dropping something off at home before running out again. In the 10 minutes I was inside, about half of the coolant was under my car. The coolant was leaking right underneath the oil pan. The car did not overheat while I was driving the 2 miles home and the leak slowly stopped under my car.
I checked all the hoses and can't find any leak around the coolant hoses nor is there any leak from the radiator. My water pump has been laboring for quite some time and I was planning to replace it soon (already bought the part). It seems like this is the place where it is leaking. Does that make sense? Is this a simple R&R or could it have damaged the engine? Thanks, Alex 85 300sd 222k |

It's most likely the water pump. I had the same issue last week. I couldn't find it cuz it was only leaking when I was driving and running the car. But finally figured it out. I had my mechanic replace it. if you have the tools and time I think it's a pretty straight forward job. You have to take out the fan and all. Plus you gotta use those sealants.

You don't have to drain the coolant completely, but here's info from MB.

Sounds like the water pump to me as well. You could slightly pressurize the coolant system with some compressed air and see if you can see the coolant dripping out of the water pump. I'd also check all the hose clamps. The can become loose on occasion and cause leaks.

You can't trust the engine temp sensor if the coolant level is below the sensor.
