Turbo Life Span?

I have an 84 300D turbo. I have found over the last few years it has become somewhat less repsonsive, and seems slower and without the "boost" feeling at around 2K RPM's. A valve adjustment is likely in order, but how long do these turbo's last? I have 255K on it. How much of a bear is it to replace them. I probably wouldn't acutally, as the car still works, just doesn't push so much anymore. Can the car be damaged if run on an ageing turbo?

you need to clean the banjo bolts on the intake and on the ALDA unit, replace the fuel filters, check to see if the in tank strainer is clear, make sure the tank isnt pulling a vacuum, adjust valves, check to see if any calipers are sticking, adjust throttle linkages, make sure the bushing on the firewall is still intact.... then you can trouble shoot the turbo

I have close to 300k on my turbo and its still chugging along just fine

Add to what TheDon says...check the turbo switchover valve for operation, and the rubber connetors for splitting/cracking. This is on the hardline circuit between the intake and the ALDA.

Shortly after I bought my 300D, I cleaned the banjo bolt and plumbing to the ALDA according to Diesel Giant's instructions. It made a big difference.

Provided you keep feeding it good clean oil the turbo should last the life of the engine. Unless the seals fail, which happens.

Right. The turbo on these engines are cool and low stressed compared to the hot torture g@s engine turbos have to endure.
