Webasto Heater Wiring

I am strongly considering getting a webasto heater from acrossed the pond. I don't always have access to plug my car in and I would like to prewarm my car so the time the heat blows is much quicker (I don't mind as much, but I have a 3 year old and would like it for him and my girlfriend is not quite used to the MN winters yet). I figure it could pay for itself as I had to tow my car once last winter when it was in the -20sF and I couldn't plug it in. Tow costs add up in a hurry. Plus I don't like being stranded.

My main concern is the electrical wiring. How difficult would it be to buy one that was, say for a BMW, and rewire it? The rest of the installation seems pretty straightforward- coolant and fuel line tapping, mounting, etc.

I would like to wire it to some form of universal remote and completely get rid of the timer as well.

Anyone have any advice on Webastos or wiring?
Thanks!
-Ryan

Provided you know what the wires are supposed to hook to, it shouldn't be too hard. If you buy one and have no idea how it was hooked up or how it is supposed to, could be quite a task.

Many of them come with manuals. The only issue is they are written in German...

I will have to spend some time on the translator site...

$1000 is a lot more than I'm looking to spend. I think I can get a deal if I buy a used one from Europe.

I have a Wabasto eng. heater I pulled off a euro 123 gasser at PNP thinking I could install it on the 671 eng. but don`t seem to have the space like the gasser had.

At last I have one

OK- I got a new keyboard....

My TD had a webasto in it at one point. It still has the wiring harness. I did a bit of research on it, and concluded that it had a DBW-46 unit- which is the same as a BBW-46, except the '"fleece" which is changeable between diesel and benzene(gasoline) for about $10.

I had looked into ebay.de and found many units for as little as $150 to close to a grand. I have an english manual pdf for this unit, if you need it. I also found a gasser webasto,(wp1021) which I have, that I never really got around to getting working.

the new units($1K) are supposed to run B100 w/ no problem, so long as the fuel is not gelled up. so maybe the $1k is worth it if you use bio mix in your main tank. I think a webasto for veggy guys is a great idea- you can keep your car at operating temps for 1L/hour of fuel. also the wiring is tied into the heater blower circuit so once the coolant is up to temp, the blower turns on, warming your car and defrosting the windows.

If you want to talk, send me an email....

Just an opinion. Webastos are $$$$$$$$$. It might be better to buy a 1k or 2k Honda gas generator into which to plug the electric block heater on cold days. You get the benefit of a warm engine for roughly the same price, plus you have a generator for other uses. You could even buy a Harbor Freight generator adequate for the job for about $200.

Yeah, but Webasto heaters are SOOOOO nice. Burns only a little fuel, silent, heats the engine and cabin (and fuel).

I've had them before, if I lived any further north, or needed to drive/leave my diesel car out in the winter, I wouldn't be without.

I feel bad. Unplugged and unbolted mine and sent it to the curb. Didn't think it would be worth anything to anyone.

I've thought about that, but the generator would only be for emergencies. I've found some pretty small generators for cheap on ebay, but if I got a Webasto I could use it every day, not just in emergencies.

Plus there is a large difference between a block heater (just warm enough to start the engine) and a Webasto (up to near operating temp on start up).

I lived in an apartment for 3 winters driving my 240D full time. It gets to -20F here a couple times per winter so there were lots of instances it wouldn't have started without a block heater but I couldn't run a cord from my apartment.
I went to Autozone and bought the biggest marine battery they had which was (IIRC) 110ah. I hooked it to my 400watt inverter and stuck the whole thing in the trunk. When it was real cold I ran an extension cord from the trunk to the block heater, turned on the inverter and went back in the apartment to shower and eat breakfast. In an hour the car would start easily. I'd let it idle for a minute while I lugged the battery back up to our third floor walkup and put it on the charger. Worked a treat and got me some exercise.

If you were slick you'd wire up the marine battery so it could recharge off the car while you drove. Careful though 1 hour of use is something like 50% capacity on the battery... I had a 1 hour commute so if I'd gotten around to wiring it up it would have had plenty of time.
If you were super slick you'd run the extension cord through the car and somehow hook the inverter up so you could turn it on with a car remote starter!

I love the Webasto idea but my way works fine and costs like 1/10 as much...

-Curt
