catasrophic IP failure
Hey, I just pulled the IP off a project 300 SDL I got and the pump has grenaded- any one ever seen this? Cause? Should I stop where I am as I figure the metallic shards are well circulated through out the engine? Thanks

Post on the diesel forum for better replies.
You're def going to want to drain everything before finding a donor IP and firing it back up. Have you taken the back of the pump off to see whats left inside?

Grenaded IP
I guess I posted in the wrong spot so-- I acquired a 300 sdl- that was running _BADLY I had an IP from another 603 that I know was good so I started there. When I pulled the IP there was evidence of massive internal failure. Anyone seen this before? Causes? Is there so much metal circulated throughout this engine I should stop and cut my losses? What would be the best way to flush the oil system? Thanks folks

I believe that the oil from there returns to the cranckase, has to go through the pickup screen (metal doesn't float well), then pump and filter.
Probably needs a good cleaning of the sump.

Yep its unlikely anything made it into the engine. Besides the sump/pump strainer....it then goes straight to the oil filter before going through the engine.

Back in the late 70s I worked in a Fuel Injection shop and ounce in a while a bearing goes bad or something in the IP Governor comes loose and causes similar problems. Most often it is the bearing that goes first.
Some times the Rollers on the IP Camfollower/Tappets go bad too. I have even seen a case on a 6cyl Maxadine Mack Diesel Truck where the Camshaft in the IP had sheared in 2 parts but the Jagged break area allowed the Camshaft to turn (but part was out of time). The intermediate bearing (in the middle) kept the IP Camshaft in alignment and the were able to drive the truck to our shop.
