Alternator rebuildable?

Well it's time for a new alternator, my bearings have been talking to me for a while now and last night they finally pepper-grindered .

It still spins freely without the belt on so im assuming bearings are shot, but my real question is would it be at all worth it to take this puppy apart and replace the bearings, brushes, possibly the armature? I wouldn't mind the amount of work but if the armature is good it would save a good deal of money. I only had to drive a mile if that after it failed.

So what do you guys think, feasible or just shut my mouth and hit up fastlane?

seems like a lot of work, how about a 3rd option if youre on a budget. try a local pick and pull.

Yes I thought about that too so should I be looking for a Mercedes or a Saab 900 to pull from?? I've read good things about them, but at the same time the tensioner isn't something I want to break.

i like to pull from a exact or similar year car. if I were going to do the saab trade I would wait until it is a want rather than a necesity, that way you have time to gather parts and can do it at your leisure. I have not seen that many saabs in the yards and i would be worried of getting one that didnt fit. the advantage to the yard is you get to remove the first one on a car you dont care about. for an alternator I would take a good pair if cutters and cut the belt and spin it before you put too much work in removing it

Yeah just got a rebuilt, and turns out the rebuilder installed a shaft without the keyway! So after 6 trips and 3 days I got an alternator I could finally use.

I got an ALX129 from evilbay for $120 shipped; I know that's alot but it's a 115A upgrade.
Only custom work required is swapping the pulley and replacing the wiring from the alternator to the battery

Me too got an 80a from fleabay. Was a bit apprehensive but turned out to be a good unit. I believe the 240D uses a 55a & the 300D a 65a.

the 80a cost me $84.99 new plus shpg - core charge. Even came with double pulley.
