Is this car a good deal? 91 300D
I am unfamiliar with the chassis and engine. Reliability, Maintenance, Common problems etc..
I am now commuting 2 hrs a day round trip and the old 300SD is not liking it too much. Looking for something with working AC, little nicer, etc.. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/cto/908503527.html Opinions please Thanks

I was actually going to take a few pictures of this particular car. I saw it this week a few times in the Perimeter area. I didn't look inside the vehicle, but the outside is in excellent shape. I personally think that's a good deal and would buy it if I had the available money. However, I'd definitely look it over quite well prior to doing that.

Doubt it gets 40 mpg though...so with that said, I'd not place much faith on what's said, unless you can inspect yourself. Not trying to be negative, but point out what is going through my mind.

Yeah from what I've read it's more around 30-35mpgs. But I'm thinking I could offer this guy like 4500 and he would take it. It's been for sale for a while. KBB says like 3500 range if I remember correctly. If it's been maintained like they say it has I think it would be worth 4500?

Good thought, will RBM give me the records with just the VIN?

They may. Earlier this year, I was looking at a 1999 E300D (for wife) and a dealer in Austin either faxed or emailed me all the service records on the car. I did eventually pass on the car though --- PPI was the eye opening experience.

I took a look at this car today.
I didn't give it a rigorous check since the guy insisted on meeting me at a BP station which sends up red flags to me. It looks pretty good except for the after market wheels and wide tires that I'm not a fan of. Interior is black and in good condition. The exterior could benefit from a good buffing and waxing. Sorry I can't provide much more than that. I was on the way to see another car and this one was on the way. I was kinda put off by the whole "meet me at the BP" thing and really couldn't give it the usual attention in that busy parking lot. It is over priced. About a $4500 car in my opinion.

My first instinct was to say let it pass. Just too many warning bells. But then I remembered a friend's experience many years ago trying to sell a car and having all sorts of people that you do not want even in your yard coming by. So while "meet at BP" sounds iffy I would merely use that as an excuse to look at things even closer rather than a deal killer. The seller just may not want a bunch of lowlifes coming by his/her house.

The only real way you'll know is to thoroughly inspect it, drive it and test all the functions. I liked the after market wheels and tires, but we all have different likes of course. Drive it and let us know what you think

I've had a W124 300D before and they're nice but I'm really not looking for one right now. Like I said, it was on my way when I was going to look at another car so I figured it was worth my time to take a look.
To be fair, the guy only had 45 minutes notice and on a Saturday he very well could have previous plans that put him out and about.

Meeting on neutral ground is a good idea for a first meeting. If you were selling your Harley Davidson and invited them to see it at your home, it might disappear the next night.
