87 300D seat upgrade
I found a set of leather seats from later model 124s to upgrade my 87 300D. My absolute preference is factory velour but I've found nothing in 15 months of looking. I'd consider swapping my good condition leather seats for decent velour. But to the point, I found a set of seats for $180. Driver memory seat from a 92, passenger and rear seats from a 90.
The driver seat required moving the 92 seat to the 87 memory base. The most difficult part is releasing three zip ties in awkward locations. Runner up is fastening the cables using the same zip ties. Actually, the most difficult part is releasing the outer plastic side trim without breaking tabs. It was pretty easy once I accepted that tabs would break. The passenger seat was plug-n-play but the headrest riser doesn't work. I've yet to check if it's a wiring mismatch or something needs repair. The front seats are beyond heavy but even a wimp like me can hoist them in and out of the car solo. The difference is phenomenal. The padding of the later seats is stiffer but orthopedically correct. In retrospect, getting into the old seats is like getting on a potty with the seat up I have no idea what the original seats felt like back in 87 but I can't imagine the newer seats felt much better 16 years ago. Made more of a difference than extra padding and pool noodles accomplished. My tail bone is happy now For those who go for HD shocks and 2" swaybars, look for the heavily bolstered seats out of a Sportline car. I'm not sure if all Sportlines have 2 place rear seating. All the ones I've seen have a console in place of a middle seating position, though not as nicely trimmed as a 500E/E500 rear console. I have light gray leather seats with good nets available and an extra 90 rear seat bottom that needs heavy cleaning. Sorry, no packing or shipping. Sixto 87 300D |
