Steering Gearbox Rebuild time: Should the pitman arm have any play in it?
I bought a used box off ebay a while back, and I'm going to start on a reseal job on it, and install it in my car. Upon inspection I noticed that the pitman arm has some radial play in it. Is this normal, or should it be tight? I'd like to know before I waste my time on a dead unit. The area where the steering coupler connects the shaft to the box seems normal (just a slight amount of play). Thanks!

Have you looked at the FSM concerning working on this Gearbox ?
I suggest you do before doing anything else.... I have a paper copy and did look at it.... amazing... |

The pitman arm should pivot feely at the joint, but with no play.

Allow me to explain a little more. I'm actually resealing the box, not rebuilding it. Basically, what I'm concerned about is the shaft that the pitman are connects to moves freely (not in or out, but radial) about 1/2 inch. I just wanted to make sure that this shouldn't be tighter. Please let me know any thoughts you may have on this.
