Window Problems - 85 300SD
Greetings to all ---- some help/suggestions please...
3 of the 4 windows don't work on the 85 SD I recently picked up. The driver side front and rear windows will slip down an inch or so after closing the door a few times - It's easy to slide them up using your hands --- Any suggestions as to a common problem and what to check for? I thank you in advance for your words and wisdom.

In the window regulator is a plastic sliding jaw that needs to be replaced.
look in the parts tab above. they are around $5.00. when you remove the door panel, be sure to lift up to remove. If you pull it towards you, the tabs will break off. charlie

wow - that simple? I was expecting window regulator or motor.
So that small part causes nothing to happen when you hit the button - Is this a fairly simple repair for a novice+, DIY person?

Charmalu is probably right... exactly that happened to my car last week.
I recently acquired my 1984 300SD from JohnHef, and he was kind enough to fix my left rear window when the plastic piece in the sliding jaw broke last week. When I called him to tell him my window was stuck down, he first told me to check the switches, and when I said that neither the switch in the console nor the one on the door worked, he immediately said that "the regulator slide probably broke then". Even so, instead of just fixing the plastic piece he swapped the whole motor/regulator assembly with a working one from a parts car he has, for the following reason. The plastic piece is riveted on to the regulator, so to fix it you need to take out the regulator/motor (2 bolts, one nut on a threaded rod) assembly to break the old rivet and rivet on the new plastic piece. You also need to take out the guide rail that keeps the window straight as it retracts into the car to access the regulator /motor (2 bolts, the bottom one is in a groove in the door as opposed to a hole). Finally you need to pop open the connector that goes to the window switch so you can free the two wires that connect to the motor. If you're so inclined, it might be worth your while to just cut them instead and then solder/crimp some disconnectable connectors on. If he hadn't had the spare we definitely would have just replaced the plastic piece, it would be stupid to spend something like $100 on a new regulator when all that needs fixing is a $5 plastic part. In conclusion, it's sort of a pain, but if you're comfortable drilling out and resecuring a new rivet you should be OK. Also, just to reiterate, make sure you check the switches before you do any surgery!
