2.5 non turbo to turbo engine swap

Has anyone given this task a shot? I have a 1987 190D with a 2.5 engine. I found a 2.5 turbo, said to be from a 1990 or 1991 190D turbo, but all my technical data says that 1987 was the only year Mercedes turbo charged the 190D. Regardless, it looks to me it will work, I am looking for anybody that has done this job, and any advice they may have. Possible starting with where on this 2.5 turbo engine would I find the engine ID to confirm the year that it is, and compare it with my 2.5 non turbo. (Confirming it would fit.) Thanks in advance for all the help.

The 2.5 turbo mentioned from the early 90's are from a W124 chassis. It will physically fit in your 190, but I'll let others more familiar with the electronics tell you the differences.
You will need a different connection to the exhaust also.....

Go for it.

First, find out the exact year of the turbo engine. Then go for it. Alternatively, if you don't want to mess with it, please sell or trade the engine to me. I've done similar swaps, putting the 2.5TD engine into a '93 190E which was originally a gasser. My current "daydream" is building a 190-based turbodiesel land speed record car.

You can do the swap using all MB parts, but if you want to do it on a low budget, you may have to be somewhat patient, doing your research and sourcing used parts as necessary. I'm especially fond of the 2.5TD engine package with a 5-speed manual tranny.
