C250d cylinder head/timing chain removal
Hi everyone
I need to remove the cylinder head on my 1996 C250 diesel and want to know what the correct procedure is for removing the timing chain to enable the head to come off. Is there an easier way than supporting the chain from above, lifting up the head, then supporting the chain from below to allow the head to pass over it? Thanks |

If the engine is an OM602, set the engine to #1 TDC, mark the chain in relation to the cam sprocket, remove the tensioner, [edit] remove the upper chain guide using the special tool or stacked washers and 6mm bolt, remove the cam sprocket from the cam, remove the sprocket from the chain, let the chain drop into the timing chain cover (it won't come off the crank and IP sprockets), remove the head. Don't forget the bolts at the very front of the head into the timing chain cover and the bolts near the fuel filter. don't turn the engine while the head's off!
When the head's back on, retrieve the chain with a hook or magnet. Sixto 87 300D |
