Best Speakers to fit in original space in 300TD

Does anyone have recommendations on replacing the original speakers in my 300TD with something that fits in the original space but sounds better?

Otto

I was under the impression that 5 1/4 speakers didn't fit in the stock spot.

I just got some JBLs, there are plenty of nice 2 or even 3 way speakers that will fit, but you may need to install them from below for the grill to clear the tweeters.

BTW: what's the story with those wheels on your wagon?

I have Focal Polyglass co-axs in my 87 ... should fit in your 123, too. The front are 100cvx 4", on rear deck I have 5 1/4" 130cvx. They sound unbelievabely clear but weren't real cheap (well worth it, though, in my opinion). You can't buy them online AFAIK, but probably find them at high-end stereo store. I got mine at Tweeter, and just in time ... no longer an option.

I caught that but mentioned my rear speckers just for reference's sake. A wagon I would think would allow more flexability as far as rear choices go (would be pretty easy to put components back there). But the front locations I think are the same as mine ... and 4" Focals did fit ... the tweeters just barely fit. For 4-inchers, they put out a beautiful sound.

I'm guessing you're not channeling all that through a stock Becker....

On both my wagons I can't really hear much from the rear speakers. The front just walks all over them. Use of the fader merely simulates lowering the volume......

Good eye. It would still be similar, just a different position.

My in-dash 4.5" Alpines are deafening at 50% volume, and still have clear sound(by my ears) if that helps

Without modifications! in a 124 TD which is just too clean to cut up.

I replaced front with Blaupunkt;
I replaced the door speakers with another brand but I can't remember; JL?
and I have two Fosgate bass boxes sitting behind the back seats.
Alphasonik amplifier sits between the boxes.

When I want the room, I'll either move the boxes or pull 'em out altogether.

No cutouts, no muss, no fuss. BTW, PO had replaced the stereo unit with a Sony CD player, which thankfully has a jack-in so I can run iThings to it.

In a wagon the factory speaker in the dash and the rear header are all 3.5".

You can find 4" speakers that will fit, but if they won't fit the front when mounted from the top side, they won't fit under the rear header panel without modification.

I used Boston Acoustics 4" speakers all around, a 10" sub in the spare tire cover, and the amp where the first aid kit used to be. I needed to modify all the locations for them to fit. It sounds wonderful, here's what it looks like:

Front grills:

Rear speakers:

Subwoofer:

I bought two pairs of Blaupunkt 3 1/2" speakers recently for mine. They fit perfectly and sound great. They were only $25.00 a pair, too.
