I am doing some front end work on a 1982 300SD. I am replacing the bearing bracket bushings as part of the job. I had ordered new ones (Febi) and when I went to install them, the metal cylinder portion inside the rubber cracked and began to crumple as I tried to reach the specified torque of 80 Nm. The same thing happened on a second attempt. These are substantial bolts and it seems that such a part should come no where near to cracking at 80Nm. Just looking at the new bushing's general appearance, the metal cylinder does have an odd appearance compared to the original - perhaps something was wrong in the process when it was manufactured?
I have searched around quite a bit in this forum and elsewhere to see if anyone had a similar experience, but found nothing. I am assuming that I got some bad parts, but I would like to make sure that I am not overlooking something before I try this again. I ordered new bushings of a different brand from Fastlane (the first ones where ordered elsewhere). Any feedback, such as confirming the torque value would be greatly appreciated.
