Power steering return hose 617

Those of you with good local dealers should be happy.

Just called RBM of Atlanta as I need a length of low-pressure power steering return hose, 12mm inner diameter. Friendly parts department is happy to sell it to me for $55 per meter.

That's just nuts. I know I'm paying for the convenience of being able to pick it up on the way home, but $55 for a meter of rubber hose ought to have at least a $20 bill stuffed in there.

I wonder if 3/8" inner diameter hose can be made to fit, as I'm sure that 1/2" will be too big. Anyone else jury rig it with SAE hose?

I am sure you can find something. You are going to have to drain the system anyhow. Drain it. Remove the fitting from the box and bring it with you. This a low pressure hose and is not nearly as criticical as some other hoses others have replaced from local retailers.

call Phil

Send an email to Phil.

The hose that NAPA sold me was not even big enough for Coda.

I would prefer to get from phil but I'd also prefer to have the hose tonight - hence the last resort of the call to the dealer, but NFW am I paying that for a meter of low pressure rubber hose.

Is your hose crakced / dry rotted? Mine was leaking as well recently and a quick, dirty fix was to trim 1/4 inch off the end with the hose still attached. push it back down to the stop and clamp it back up. Its been over a month.

might be an option if nothing works out.

The original hose is 12mm ID. I haven't tried it, but I can't imagine that 3/8 P/S hose wouldn't do the job, at least as an interim measure.

RBM is a rip off. Try NAPA.

It's absurd that a dealer would force a customer to buy a full meter when they know fully well that you need half that amount.

I don't have a problem w/ the fact that it's a full meter - heck I think Fastlane sells it by the meter. What I have a problem with is $55 for a meter of rubber hose!

winmutt - NAPA doesn't have metric ID hose, but 3/8" should work so I'm just going to use that.

What would you consider a fair price to be?

Whatever customers are willing to pay.

However, this particular customer is not willing to pay.

I get this oil resistant grey Gates hose from the industrial rubber and gasket shop. I use it for all fuel and oil cooler and low pressure applications. I just replaced power steering hose with it. I think it was 1/2 " ID. Any rubber hose will work in a pinch until you can get better piece. I just pulled hose, caught power steering fluid best i could, replaced and then topped off. 10 minute job.

I needed the same 12mm hose. This past Monday I called PHIL right at his quitting time. The order was processed Monday night through a parts warehouse in Harrisburg PA. Tuesday afternoon the big brown truck delivered it to my house.(northeast Ohio) Cost was $24. It was good quality Conitec Continental hose from All Parts Express.I tried using 1/2 inch Goodyear Hose. It leaked. The 12mm hose measured 7/16 ID. I would temporarily fix it until the right hose is in hand. Good Luck.

It seems they only sell this hose is by the meter.
I replaced mine last year when I noticed it was seeping oil right through the hose. there were check marks all along the hose, so I guess the hose is only good for about 22 yrs.

So a meter is 39 inches, and 1/2 of that is 19.5. that is about the right length.

I picked up a short piece from my indie for $25.00 I think it was.

If you use after mkt. hose be sure it is oil compatable, or just as said above go to a hydrulic hose shop. they specialise in all type of applications.

I`ll trade your $55 hose for the $96 U-joint I just bought , but that is another chapter.
