#14 head
i think i got the feared #14 head on my new car.
casting number looks to be 603 016 14 01 i guess this means i have the weak #14 head. car has 450,000 miles and i believe i am the second owner (purchased from used car dealer so not sure but carfax check points to a single owner since 1987). car is in exceptional condition so i hope the head and engine were well cared for.

As long as you do not let the engine overheat, you should be fine. There are others here on this forum that have #14 heads still on the road.

Good grief!!! I think if your car has 450,000 miles you can consider the head to have been pretty strong.
Besides, they usually only have issues if the car overheats as Ralph mentioned. With that kind of mileage the whole thing is on borrowed time so no use fearing the head. Just keep the cooling system in good shape and work your way towards some really high mileage numbers.

65mph is the key. I've found I can get into the low-mid 30s on back-highways at 60mph, even with the stops and occasional passing. On the freeway at 77mph, I'm pretty happy to average 30mpg.
Don't fear the #14, fear overheating it.

I have 304k on my #14. The other posters are right, just make sure that you do not overheat the engine and you will be fine. FWIW my SDL does not go over 80 degrees even in summer traffic. I THINK I saw it go up to about 95 ONCE. The 300SD used to cruise at 95~100.
