Put power rear seats in SDL?

As an SDL owner, I've always wanted to get the power rear seats...I've always thought about buying one that has one....but...

Can I get a set of a 560 or something and transfer it onto the SDL?

I imagine its possible, but I highly doubt it'd be easy. You'd need the door panels/switches and wiring harness and everything. Worth it for a seat you're not even sitting in?

And before all that, even finding a car with it thats being parted out that has the same color interior. Thats probably a pretty rare chance.

lol true..I guess I wouldn't sit in the seat as the driver...but I love the feeling when guests come inside the car and tell you that even after 21 years, this car looks and feels like a luxury car. Which brings me to this thread's question.

I try to convince myself that it's "another thing that can malfunction"...but I still want them

It's been done. Someone here swapped a sliding rear bench into an early 80s SD.

The benefit of taking the bench from a 560 is you get heated seats as well (sliding rear bench in an SDL or 420 are rare, heated are rarer still). Of course then you'll need heated front seats

easy.......if you weld

I think it would be quite easy to MAKE your existing seat into a reclining seat if you weld.....I've seen the framework. I use to have some pics of the various pieces. I had considered making this mod to my 300SDL. But I don't know how to weld so it was too much for me. I just thought it would make my "backseat" family more comfortable on those LONG drives that I'm planning on us taking in the future. What it requires in the way of fabrication is:
  • 2 mounting brackets welded onto car in the seat BACK area (near top)
  • obtain the reclining "frame" --- back and bottom --- I've seen a few of these.
  • obtain the motor --- I just sold one to a forum member.
  • obtain the gear and plate for each side --- just sold to a forum member.
  • make\modify the top "lip" on the rear of the seat back --- this looks hard. Probably best if you can find one and use as a pattern.
  • Obtain the switches --- I've got a few.
  • Do the wiring.

You just need to find a junked 560 with the same interior as yours and do the swap. Shouldn't be that hard.

Actauly you could probably go and buy a good 560SEL for a G note or two with the same interior as your car, do the swap than sell the 560SEL for what you paid.

We had a 86 SDL with the sliding rear seat. Really never used it. The kids were in the back all the time, but they moved the seat once or twice when we first got it and then never really touched it.
Lots of work for very little use in my opinion. But if you want it, follow the advise given above.

That's interesting....What I also thought was....Switch the engines off a 560 and the 300...

The 560 does come with that automatic leveling suspension doesn't it (another hardcore expense if faulty I assume)?

Not particularly faulty. You'll need the complete rear suspension out of a 560. Make sure you get good struts, accumulators and leveling valve. Get all hydraulic lines to the engine bay. I don't know what the 560 uses for a pump. You should be able to use the tandem pump from an 87 300TD if the 560 pump won't fit a 603.

You'll have to toss a coin as to which diff to use. 560 might have a better ratio for highway cruising.

Next can of worms is if the 560 diff is set up for ASD. Very rare option on SDLs

Just find a 1991 350SDL, those came with a lot of toys. I have seen them with SLS, adjustable rear seats, and traction control.

Always better to buy the car set up the way you want it from the factory, MB does the best job.

IIRC ASD = anti-slip differential. Does ASD share the SLS hydraulic system or does it have a separate pump and reservoir?

I just fixed the ones in the 380. It probably isn't worth the amount of work, it's not going to be a simple bolt in swap.

Another good option.

The m117 is a pretty kick ass V8, and it would be nice to have a W126 that can do 0-60 in under a day.
