Leak in the main vacuum line on an 1985 300D.

Hello, my name is Sean M. Hartman, I'm new to the forums and to a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D. I bought it at a dirt cheap price with some knowen problems, and a few more that have popped up. So, I'll work through these step by step. My first and biggest issue is a major vacuum leak, possibly to be followed by more due to the age of the car. The main leak I have found so far is on the main vacuum line coming from the vacuum pump and going to the brake booster. there is a plastic valve of some sort that T's off to two smaller line that then spit up on a three-way splitter and the other one on a four-way splitter. the plastic valve on the main line has cracked around where it T's off and on the line that goes to the three-way, I have around 5psi constant vacuum, and the other (the one that goes to the four-way) none, zero, zilch! Now, question is, it there any "home remedies" for this leak? I have located a new line through Performance Products, but do not have the $131.00 they want for it currently. I tried super glue with no success. lol The problems I am having with the car is that after it sits for a few hours, it will NOT fire at all with out some ether (starting fluid) which is hard on a diesel. It won't shut off from the ignition switch, you must use the stop lever under the hood. The Central Lock System doesn't work either, and to get into the truck, the driver's side door look has to be cycled a few times, then set in the lock position and door closed before the truck will open. Any ideas on a lower cost tempory, or even better, perminent fix for the vacuum line would be very helpful, along with any other information that may be shared with me. Thank you in advance!

Hey Sean, Welcome to the forum! you'll love it here, I haven't been a member for all too long, but so far it is a great resource for any and everything to do with Mercedes.

You can patch the main vacuum line with some duct tape, electrical tape works too but will loose adherence with the wide swing of temperature under the hood of your new beast. Where is the leak at, if it is a gash or hole in the line duct tape will work best, but where something connects into the line not so much.. I used teflon tape in my brake booster connection and it is still working 3 months later. I would recommend a MityVac, they are great for fixing the over engineered vac systems on these cars
