83 300sd Engine Rebuild Thread

I am in the beginning of a rebuild of my 83 300sd engine. This will be my third rebuild, first Mercedes. I was hoping to get advice from the expirienced people on this forum.

Cylinder Head has been pulled and cleaned up. I planned on replacing the valve seals ($20). Not sure about the valve guides. Intakes appears tight, but all of exhaust valves seems loose. I just jiggled them, I did not measure them. The valves will need to be reground. The chambers and cam shaft all appear to be in good shape.

What is a fair price to have the valves reground? Repairing valve guides?

Are there any conditions on the head I should keep an eye on?

Unless you are positive that a local shop has significant experience with these heads, you'd be well advised to ship it to Metric Motors. When they get done, it'll be to spec and you'll have some confidence that it'll go another 150K. Too many folks send it to the local place who can get the valves within .003" or so. The oil consumption then goes through the roof and you've got to do it again.

The cost to do the valves and skim the head isn't too great.........it's the prechambers and springs that usually add to the bill significantly.

Brian,

Can you post a link to their website? I'm having trouble finding it / pulling it up.

Thanks,

Scott
